Rough Sledding

Rough Sledding   ...   Friday 17th May 2013

Some days most things go smoothly, other days not much goes right.  Sadly, today was one of the later.  We set off to go visit Jamestown.  As we arrived in the National Park, we got a little confused about the location of the visitors center and wound up doing two U-turns to go back past the signs.  This really wouldn’t have been a big deal except that as we passed the large lawn-mowing tractor, a piece of debris was thrown up and hit the side of the car.  We came to a stop and hopped out to look.  The result was a large ding several inches long with a lot of paint removed.  I’m sure the rental car company is not going to be happy about that.  We reported the damage to the National Park Service.  We had to be interviewed by a ranger who took a statement.  She seemed to think that we were making this up.  Even if all goes smoothly we are probably looking at a three-way fight between our insurance company, the National Park Service or mowing company insurance and the rental company.  After leaving the parking lot at Jamestown visitors center, we had a flat tire.  It appeared that there was a hole in the sidewall of the rear tire, adjacent to the damaged door.  We speculated that the tire was damaged by whatever hit the car door.  The “temporary spare” wasn’t going to be adequate for the rest of our trip so Mike went to a tire place to find out if the tire can be repaired or needs to be replaced.  What an ordeal.  I don’t think I’ll have many happy memories of Jamestown.

Car door scrape - we took the photo for factual purposes but quite like it as an abstract

  1. Sad to read of your ordeal. I love Jamestown and the 'dig'. Hope you found some redeeming quality .

    1. Hi Charlotte, It was lovely down by the water and very interesting to wander around. The archeology museum was fascinating. It's just we were all a bit bummed out over the incident with the car.... I'm sure we'll get over that and remember the good parts!
