Exploring Colonial Williamsburg

Exploring Colonial Williamsburg   …  Wednesday 15th May 2013

The weather was absolutely beautiful today - clear blue skies, temperatures in the high 70s - low 80s. We spent the day walking around Colonial Williamsburg and really enjoyed it. The buildings and surrounding area are beautifully laid out and maintained. The people who work there, dressed in the period costumes and re-producing some of the activities of that age are genuine and helpful. Unlike Plymoth Plantations these people don't pretend ignorance of the modern day but will talk with you in a much more natural and informed way. For example the wheel-rights are skilled craftsmen using tools and designs of that era. All the work they undertake  is for genuine orders, creating wheels, carts and carriages for use in Colonial Williamsburg or for other historical sites. One highlight of the day was listening to "Thomas Jefferson" reflect on the generation of the Declaration of Independence. The actor was talented - completely engaged in the part. He was quick thinking and witty, and was able to parry the comments of the audience with responses that were historically relevant. We came back to our rooms about 4pm and the family took a rest before heading out for a fairly late dinner at Cristiana Campbell's tavern. Well one of our party turned 78 today so we thought we better celebrate in style! We dined in candle light and were entertained with stories from "Cristiana" herself, as well as singing and guitar and mini-harp music.
