A Quiet Day at Emerald Bay

A Quiet Day at Emerald Bay   …   Thursday 7th March 2013

Not much to report. We had a lazy day wandering round the resort next to the marina. The weather was beautiful and we took a swim from the beach and then joined the couple on the boat next to ours for lunch at the local bar / restaurant. It's hard to imagine a more picture perfect setting for this restaurant and the food and company were also great. Ross and Rosemary are from Canada and keep their boat near Lake Okachobee in Florida. They come down and launch it in late November / December then spend 4 months cruising the Bahamas before returning to Florida, laying up the boat and heading north to Canada. They have been doing this for the past 7 years straight but first started cruising the Bahamas back in the 80s with their family. This was in the days before GPS and we chatted about how challenging the navigation was in those days. The truth be told you still need visual piloting skills and the ability to assess water depths and locate coral by eye, but there's no doubt that GPS is a huge help. Our walk in the afternoon took us past the local liquor store, actually now the only shop of any kind in the area. Apparently the supermarket next door closed down during the recession, as did the pizza place and a bank. I'm happy to report that you can buy 1.75 litres of Bacardi Gold label rum for $16, making it by far the cheapest commodity in the Bahamas. Tomorrow we plan to head on to Georgetown.
