Unexpected Afternoon

Unexpected Afternoon

Tuesday September 1st 2020

The day started overcast with about 10kts of breeze.  We set off from Frenchboro wearing our foul weather jackets.  The swell that had kept me from sleeping well was still running.  I felt distinctly queasy.  The fresh wind helped me keep my breakfast in my stomach. However, by the time we arrived in the anchorage formed by Merchant Island and Harbor Island, we were both shivering.  A cup of re-heated coffee and a piece of pie seemed to send us into a blissful little nap.

After lunch, I had a shower—taking advantage of the hot water we had made by motoring.  While I was showering, Mike checked the fuel separators revealing a lot of water in the one in use.  After changing that out and swapping propane tanks around, we rowed to shore on Harbor Island.

This island is another of the “Maine Island Trail Association” locations.  We had a walk around finding the three campsites, looking at birds and taking some photos.  Returning to the dinghy, we found it ‘high and dry’ as low tide was less than an hour away.  The wind had dropped; the swell was gone.  We enjoyed a quiet hour in the cockpit taking in the beauty of the location.  The profound difference between the high versus low tide appearance of these island is truly astonishing.

In the morning the tide will be high and the temperature is likely to be low but at least we saw this place at it’s very best.
