Bloomers, brown trousers and other stray thoughts

Bloomers, brown trousers and other stray thoughts

Thursday 10th Sept 2020

As for the bloomers, there is a word I thought had vanished from the English language along with the garments themselves (thank goodness).  However, when we caught sight of a vessel sailing out of the fog, Mike announced they are flying a spinnaker and a mizzen bloomer.  To be precise that is the singular rather than the plural but.... It was a new boating term for me.  Apparently, a spinnaker-like sail flown off the mizzen-mast is called a mizzen bloomer. The world of boating is full of it’s own strange terminology.

This morning Mike made reference to a joke about Admiral Nelson’s statement on seeing the Spanish Armada. Something along the lines of: “best bring me the red jacket and the brown trousers.” I didn’t think much of it at that moment.  Later in the day when the light-house at Cape Neddick appeared out of the fog—I thought, “should have had the brown trousers”.

On the wildlife front, we spotted a couple of northern gannets including a juvenile.  During a somewhat clearer section of our passage from Biddeford to York harbor, we spotted a whale, most likely a Minke.

We are here in York to meet up with friends—Cindy and Bob and Marty and Gail. It’s great to have the opportunity to catch up.  There is a spot where we can sit outside and have some food and drink.  Right now though it’s raining steadily...
