Back in the "Real World"

Back in the "Real World"   …  Wed 3rd April

It's now about 9.40pm, well past "boater's midnight" and I'm still up, sitting at the Nav station on the boat trying to capture my thoughts for today. We arrived in Nassau at about 4pm and docked right behind "Serendipity" at the Nassau Harbor Club. We had left Allen's Cay anchorage shortly after 9.30 am planning to cross the Yellow Bank, with its shallow water and occasional coral heads, on a rising tide with  the sun directly overhead. We tried really hard to sail but we could only do about 4 - 4.5 knots on a broad reach and so after a couple of hours we ended up motor sailing the remainder of the 30 mile passage. The 4-5 mile stretch across the Yellow Bank turned out to be easy - we could clearly see the isolated coral heads well in advance and steer around them. Arriving in Nassau has been a bit of a culture shock. The biggest settlement we've seen in the past 6 weeks was Georgetown, which you can walk around in about 10 minutes. Most places we've visited have had no roads, very few if any houses and hardly any people. It's nice to have access to decent showers, laundry and shops but the traffic and bustle seem a little over-whelming. We will spend the next couple of days doing boat jobs and re-provisioning, then on Friday our friend Bob Knowles arrives to join us for the passage back to Florida. There is some bad weather forecast for Friday, but once that has passed we are supposed to have a period of settled conditions well suited for the next leg of our journey.
