Tasha and McKenzie Arrived

Tasha and McKenzie Arrived

Tuesday 3rd February 2020

Tasha and McKenzie arrived on schedule in Key West yesterday evening. After checking in to their AirBnB and eating some dinner they came over to the boat to see us and we got to hang out for a while in the cockpit. It’s the first time we’ve met McKenzie and it was lovely to see her. We decided to bail on our plans to sail today as it was still blowing 20 knots last night and we thought we’d give it a chance to settle down. I had shared our plans to sail today with the dock-master and he suggested we might like to think again. He thought the seas would still be really bumpy and we would be much better off waiting until Thursday.

So today we met up at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and beach. I’ll give Tasha and McKenzie credit for being on Wyoming time because they were only just getting up when Gloria and I arrived at the beach! We had brought a picnic lunch with us, but with the prospect that the girls would arrive later I started to panic that I might succumb to starvation before lunch and so I went to the cafĂ© to buy a small pizza. We managed to snag a picnic table that was right on the edge of the beach but shaded by some Casuarina trees … a perfect spot. We retired to our respective homes around 4pm and as I write this Tasha and McKenzie are on their way over and we plan to drink “Painkillers” in the cockpit and eat Pad Thai with shrimp.

Painkiller = 2 parts rum, 1 part orange juice, 1 part cream of coconut and 4 parts pineapple juice, with ice and a sprinkle of nutmeg on top. The “painkiller” is a drink invented at the “Soggy Dollar” on Jost van Dyke in the British Virgin Islands, a well known beach bar that we actually went to in 2017, although if I recall we took the dinghy to shore rather than swimming.
