Kayaking the mangroves

Kayaking the mangroves

Monday 8th February 2021

Tasha and McKenzie came up with a great plan for their final day … cycle over to Stock Island and rent kayaks or paddle-boards and explore the mangroves. Gloria and I walked over to their AirBnB apartment just after noon and we had a picnic lunch out on their front porch. We could have descended into a post-lunch coma at this point but we rallied and jumped on our bikes and cycled out the ~ 4 miles to Stock Island. Tasha and McKenzie had once again rented a tandem … as my brother in law Rod says “Wherever you relationship is going a tandem will get you there quicker”! For our mangrove exploration Gloria and I settled on a two person kayak and the Tasha and McKenzie each went for a paddle-board. Once we left the dock we headed south down the channel between Key West and Stock Island, where we saw several sharks, the turned due west along canal and from there into a wild area of mangroves. It was exciting with very narrow channel leading from the canal into a salt pond. It would be surprising if people don’t regularly lost in this area – although we were given a hand-drawn map there aren’t exactly a lot a clear landmarks! We made it back safely and cycled home. Tasha and McKenzie joined us for a farewell dinner in the cockpit of Cotinga … cauliflower soup followed by braised chicken with tomatoes and olives … and of course some cocktails. They head back to Lander Wyoming tomorrow morning. It has been a fantastic week having them around and we will miss them.
