Making the adjustment

Making the adjustment

Tuesday February 9, 2021

Our visitors left Key West this morning and we will miss them..  We didn’t get to see them before they left today.  They have three flights to get back to Wyoming and will land at Riverton at 9:30 pm (mountain time).  I’m sure they will be plenty tired by then.

We had to investigate why our sump box was overflowing.  This box drains both the shower and the fridge.  Right now we are showering at the marina facilities on shore.  The only source of water to this box is from the melting ice in the fridge.  After extensive testing with the voltmeter, Mike was pretty certain the problem was the float switch.  By taking that out of the circuit, we could get the pump to kick in by turning on the main panel switch.  For the interim this is how we will manage the sump.  We have a new float switch on order.  Let’s hope it doesn’t turn into one of those parcels that chases us around the country!

After some lunch, we took a walk to the Coast Guard station and then on to the cemetery. Originally the cemetery was near Higgs Beach (on the south side of the island).  However in a storm the burial ground was damaged and a new site was selected.  The current location is on the highest land on the island.  The look of the cemetery is reminiscent of New Orleans with many tombs being above ground.  Even here the roosters and chickens roam free.  On many a slab we saw iguanas sunning themselves.

In the course of our walk we saw a Bald Eagle, a Short-Tailed Hawk, a pair of common ground doves and one smallish hawk that we couldn’t identify.  On the way back to the boat we got ice cream.  We’ve resisted ice cream so far in Key West.  It was good!

As you wander round Key West it's incredible to see some of the plants that are growing outside in people's gardens that we would struggle to grow in our house. Here are some shots I took somewhere between the cemetery and the ice cream.
