Perfect Tranquility

 Perfect Tranquility

Sat 15th  – Sun 16th Aug 2020

We are faced with a dilemma. We need to run our engine to drive the compressor that cools our freezer plates, but we are anchored in Seal Cove on the island of Vinalhaven, along with a number of other boats, in perfect tranquility. We have just experienced a beautiful sunset and the water is absolutely flat and it is silent. We feel that it would be a crime to disturb all this with the sound of our diesel engine.

Gloria’s brother Rod and sister Liz arrived in Rockland yesterday afternoon from their respective homes in Rhode Island and Maine. Mike picked them up in the dinghy and ferried them back to Cotinga, anchored about a mile away from town behind the breakwater. We decided to stay put for the night and spent the evening eating fish tacos and catching up with each other. This morning we sailed out of Rockland and headed east to Vinalhaven, passing between the north and south islands along Fox Thoroughfare. We headed in to Seal Cove on the east side of Vinalhaven and wound our way through to the isolated inner bay and dropped our anchor. This is a beautiful location, surrounded by wooded granite shores. We rowed the “Dumb Dog” to a small island in the afternoon and took a wander ashore, just hanging out watching seals in the bay, a few shore birds and other boats arriving. This was relaxing day, capped off by drinks and dinner in the cockpit and the fabulous sunset. I think we’ll wait a while until our neighbors are likely to be turning in for the night and then run the engine for 30 minutes.
