Odd jobs

Odd jobs

Thursday 1st October 2020

It’s the first of October and the full moon tonight.  I looked at the Eldridge today (a sailing almanac with tide tables etc) and noted that there will be a second full moon in October on the 31st. It’s rare for the moon to be full twice in one calendar month—it called the Blue Moon.

These are our final days in East Greenwich.  We are still trying to finish up our list of boat jobs, get provisioned for the next leg and say goodbye to family and friends.  Today, Mike put a coat of varnish on the “toe rail” a teak cap rail that runs all around the deck.  I shortened the new shower curtain that was dragging on the floor of the shower stall.  We did some food shopping, took a trip to Jo-Ann’s to buy elastic for our headlamps. Then we stopped by my brother’s house for a last visit before we leave.

Tomorrow we plan to fill the water tanks and shop for fresh produce.  In the afternoon, we are going to meet up with Steve and Laura at Roger Williams Park for a ‘late lunch’.  Saturday our plan is to pick up our friend Will at the airport, drop the car at Paul’s house and then take off for Newport.  That will put us in a good position to leave Narragansett Bay on Sunday heading to either Block Island or Fisher’s Island (depending on the weather, of course).  It should be fun to have Will on board as we make our way down Long Island Sound.  Hopefully we will get some nice sailing in those protected waters.

As departure day draws near, we start to realize how fun it has been to be close to family and friends.  Cruising down the ICW in the COVID era seems unlikely to allow the kind of social interactions that were possible in 2012.  We will find out how we take to this new style of cruising.

Looking off the bow to the southern end of East Greenwich cove ... note the new windlass and chain stopper (spring 2020) and the wood around the edge is the "toe rail" that we have been varnishing

"Windsong" the boat on the mooring to the north of us (split tone B&W)

Lights on the shore ... the ultimate abstract (split tone B&W)
