Rainy sailing

Rainy sailing

Monday October 5, 2020

We were surprised to awake to rain this morning.  To be more truthful, some had heard the rain during the night.  I just wasn’t among them.  It seemed very cold and raw in the cockpit and we decided to postpone our departure somewhat in the hope of experiencing the forecast desiccation.  Knowing that there would be favorable current during the morning that would turn against us in the afternoon, we compromised and set out at about 11 am.

It continued rainy with a cold wind.  To lift our spirits, the captain mentioned that smoked shoulder was on the menu for this evening.  This led me to contemplate the multitude of culinary opportunities afforded to those who eat the pig.  Am I the only one who thinks of bacon, roast pork, pork chops and many kinds of sausage?  Frankly, I hope not.

While pondering the dietary use of the pig, I remembered that Will had been telling us about the book he is reading.  This covers the engineering feats involved in the Apollo missions.  One of the challenges was to figure out what might happen to people during the dramatic accelerations/decelerations that would be involved in space travel.  The engineering teams turned to studies on (you guessed it) pigs to convince themselves that damage in internal organs could be avoided.

One of the interesting little aspects of Will’s book was that each seat was customized to the astronaut.  Immediately, I had a mental image of some chap sitting down onto a cushion of that plastic goo that’s used to make an impression of your tooth before serious dental work.  There’s a thought for you to enjoy as you eat your sausage dinner.

Tonight we are in a harbor on the north west side of Fisher Island at the east end of Long island Sound. (If you want to see where we are just cut and paste the following coordinates into Google maps)
