Sleep Disorders—4th December 2012
You would think that a good night of sleep would be a
certainty tied up to a dock with almost no motion and no worries about dragging
the anchor. At least that’s what I
thought. We went along to the “Captain’s
Lounge” to watch the Giants vs. Redskins game last night. At the end of the third quarter, I was
falling asleep so I walked back to the boat.
I was fast asleep by the time Mike came back. Then at about 5 am, I heard all this rustling
from the other side of the v-berth. I turned over and started to drift back to
sleep. Suddenly there was an almighty
rustling. I looked over to see Mike
removing his duvet from the duvet cover.
Good, I thought, now he’ll be cooler and stop thrashing around. I realized that I was too warm under a
sheet and thin fleece blanket. I threw
off the blanket and looked up at the hatch—sealed up like a drum. Then more noises, Mike was opening the window
on his side. I tried to get into a
comfortable position… Next he had jumped out of bed, the light in the aft cabin
went on. I heard the sound of the
hatches being closed, the thumping of cupboards, sliding of hatch boards,
etc. A peep toward the aft of the boat
showed that the screen was being inserted into the companionway. Now that I was almost fully awake, I decided
I might as well hit the head. As I left
the head, Mike was spraying what I assumed to be bug repellent all over
himself. I went back to bed and Mike
followed. Peace did not reign, however,
as the propane alarm started to go off, triggered, no doubt, by the propellant
from the bug spray. Just how much chaos
can one guy cause in a single night?
