The Big Windy

The Big Windy

Monday March 8, 2021

Over the course of Sunday evening the wind strength continued to increase.  It blew pretty strongly all night and most of today.  It’s late afternoon now and the sound of the wind and the creaking of the mooring lines is the background to our dinner preparation and blog writing.  If the forecast is correct this will be the soundtrack of the next many days.

On the good ship “Cotinga”, Mike is working on the list of boat jobs.  Today he tackled the bronze rudder plate that has become covered in verdigris. (Wikipedia suggests this will be a copper chloride.) Then he worked on cleaning the fridge.  Meanwhile, I did nothing useful (once again!) –simply cut my hair, badly.

After chores we went to shore in an exciting dinghy ride (choppy).  The dinghy docks were moving around in a way we had not experienced hitherto.  The first stop on our walk turned out to be the taco truck, where we had another delicious lunch.  We managed to resume our walk before the need for a nap overtook us.  We walked along the northern side of Marathon taking in the heavily white-capped bay views.  Returning to the marina, we had showers and made our way back to the boat.

Each time we go to shore we get water in our two jerry cans.  Our hope is that we can fill our starboard tank in this manner before we set off from here.  Because our tank gauges don’t really work, it’s not possible to know if we are making headway on re-filling.  This is somewhat frustrating as it’s heavy work and not made any easier by these big winds.

The scruffy Mike squinting badly and definitely happier than I look!
