"Sunday Morning"

Thursday 23 Nov 2017

Sunday was a grey and wet day. There were many torrential downpours and the sun never really showed through. Ironically, cloudy days can be good for photography when you want to pick up the richness of the colors without too much contrast. So before retiring to the bar to watch football, Brian and I spent the afternoon wandering around the marina. We hadn’t been out too long when we bumped into Donna and she asked us if we were taking happy or sad photos. Mostly sad we replied. She then took us along the dock to show us “Sunday Morning”, her boat that had just been salvaged off the bottom of the harbor (see photos below). Donna and her husband come from Beaufort (“Bew-fort”), South Carolina, but had lived aboard for a couple of years and clearly spent many wonderful times cruising with their family. They had been keeping “Sunday Morning” in Grenada but recently moved the boat up to Nanny Cay because the BVIs are more readily accessible. As Donna said – not a good move. It appears that Hurricane Irma flipped the boat and drove it on shore, based on the crushed in topside, and then washed it off the shore where it sank in the harbor. Donna said theirs was the last boat pulled out of the harbor, but a diver told me yesterday that she knows of at least 4 or 5 more on the bottom. Donna and her husband had flown down to try and salvage personal items, but there really was very little that could be saved. They did have a secret compartment with money in it in case they were robbed, and later in the afternoon I found them laundering their money on the lawn whilst drinking a cocktails!

Cotinga on dock M16 - as you can see the new docks fared well in the storm - so it's not all scenes of destruction. Charter activities are re-starting and the docks are busy.

Lovely reflections amidst the destruction

Great colors, a beautiful catamaran ... right next to a sunken one!

Donna and her husband, money laundering, in the literal sense - the buckets are full of cash recovered from a secret compartment!
