Up the Wahoo … Again !!!

Up the Wahoo … Again !!!

Wednesday 7th April 2021

Well Gloria’s final sentence in her blog last night was prophetic. We completed the first part of our planned two-stage trip and anchored in Wahoo River, but by mid afternoon we had lost all ambition to move on and decided to spend the night here. Well it is lovely. When the alarm went off at 6 am I was in no mood to get up. Some might say I was even a little cranky! Coffee helped and by 6.45 am we figured it was light enough to get moving and so off we went. We saw no depth issues in the infamous Creighton Narrows and it was a beautiful ride in flat waters and early morning light down in to Sapelo River. It was about 2 hours past high tide by this point and we were doing 7.8 knots over the ground with the engine at moderate revs. Then we turned up towards the Wahoo River and our speed dropped to 3.7 knots – such are the vagaries of current in the Georgia rivers.

After anchoring we ate a hearty breakfast of bacon, eggs and bagels, what every doctor recommends. Then we put the outboard on the dinghy and took a tour up a narrow meandering muddy creek. We added a few birds to our list – Clapper Rail, Red Breasted Merganser and Virginia Rail. We also saw some big fish that Gloria believes are long nose gar. It was a pleasant lazy ride. Now it’s late afternoon and we are sitting out in the cockpit in the sunshine and I’m enjoying a cold beer. We have just showered (always good to do that before it gets cool in the evening). As I look around I see water, marsh grasses and some islands of trees. There is not one single house, no other boats, no people – we are absolutely on our own. Tomorrow we’ll get up a little later and move on another 10 miles or so.

It’s worth noting that we have been here before. If you check out the blog for 17th Nov 2012 you can see we came in here on our way south. On that day we covered 60 miles … I think we must have been in a hurry to get south! In the photos from that day is a shot from the Savannah River of the container ship Evergreen Delight, sister ship to the Evergreen Ever Given that ran aground in the Suez canal.
