“Castaways”

“Castaways”

Wednesday 20th January 2021

We celebrated President Biden’s inauguration with an evening trip to “Castaways” for dinner and drinks … but more on that later. Living aboard our boat in Marathon is an interesting experience. The weather is mostly beautiful, the harbor is very well protected so there is no stress about impending weather and the marina facilities are excellent. So what is not to love? For me, the down sides are that this is far removed from adventure travel and there isn’t that much to do ashore. One particularly negative review that I read described it as a parking lot for boats, which is a little harsh, but you get the idea! Gloria and I are so different; she is so much more relaxed once we are settled in a safe location and is enjoying doing more quilting and happy to do whatever activity the day brings along. I myself get anxious that I’m going to be bored and start fretting about what activities we could or should be doing. I really just need to learn to chill out a little more! We now have our bikes ashore, locked up at the marina, so we have “wheels” to get around. But Route 1 is a two-lane highway that dominates the land and walking and cycling are somewhat limited.

We spent this morning mostly on the boat; Gloria continued working on her quilt and I worked on sanding, masking and varnishing the “eye-brow” teak rail that runs along the top of the cabin roof. It was a gorgeous day – honestly just fun to hang out. After lunch we went ashore, picked up our bikes and cycled around the golf course and some of the residential areas to the south of Route 1. Then in the late afternoon we jumped in the dinghy and headed round to “Castaways”. This is a popular and well regarded waterfront bar / restaurant that you can get to in about a 10 minute dinghy ride from our boat. We were able to tie up at their dinghy dock and had a reservation for an outside table. Our hostess noticed that we came in by dinghy and commented that she herself lived on a boat out on one of the town moorings. This fitted with our impression that the harbor is occupied in a large part by live-aboard boaters and cruisers that spend many weeks and months here  … for all of the reasons stated above. “Castaways” was awesome, with happy-hour between 2 pm and 6pm and a wide selection of draft beers and sushi rolls at $7 each. Both beer and sushi were excellent! Gloria, not a fan of raw fish, opted for a ginger salad appetizer and the vegetable pasta dish. It was a really nice evening out in a relatively Covid safe environment. By the time we were finished eating it was getting cool and starting to get dark, but a quick dinghy ride with a beautiful sunset behind us had us back to “Cotinga” in no time.

p.s. For the record it’s been 150 years since a former President failed to attend the inauguration of his successor. Today the former First Lady didn’t even bother to show the Biden’s around the White House, which is another long standing traditional. In my opinion the Trumps are a couple of classless turds and I am delighted to see them gone. It is my deepest wish that having spent four years in the White House the former President now has the opportunity to experience the opposite end of the Federal housing spectrum.

A beautiful morning in Boot Key Harbor

The "Red Boat" - a landmark in Boot Key harbor as the boat nearest the dinghy channel to the marina. It's also somewhat typical of the live-aboard boats in the harbor ... hard to believe they ever go anywhere else.

The dinghy dock at "Castaways"

Fine beer, excellent sushi and vegetable pasta ... we deliberately sat at the quiet end of the outdoor dining, but even these tables started to fill up later.

A stunning sunset as a backdrop to our dinghy ride back to Cotinga

  1. I breathed a sigh of relief watching the inauguration yesterday, and was also happy to see Dr. Fauci, as chief medical advisor to the president, being able to freely discuss science.

    1. Hi Sheila - yes! I also think it is awesome to see a Cabinet level position of "Presidential Science Advisor and Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy" with Eric Lander as the nominee.
