Touring Bequia
… Sat 3rd Feb 2018
Bequia (pronounced “beck-way”) is one of our favorite places
so far. It has a large well protected harbor, Port Elizabeth in the west facing
Admiralty Bay. It’s become something of
a tradition after making a passage to have a hearty breakfast, we
started the day with bacon and eggs, coffee and orange juice. And then took the
dighy to shore and tied up to a rickety dock. It would take us another 24 hours
before we figured out where the real dinghy dock was! The main town has loads
of Caribbean charm and plenty of “authentic” characters without being
intimidating. We found ourselves at the fruit and veg market and met a
Rastafarian gentleman who called himself “The President”. He was highly
entertaining (see picture below) and we tried to encourage him to come to the
USA and replace the turd who’s currently in office, but we sensed that he was having
too much fun where he is! The waterfront is beautiful with lots of cafes,
restaurants and a boardwalk / footpath that leads around to the adjacent beach.
It’s just a really nice place to hang out.
On the advice of the tourist information we took a taxi up
to the top of Mount Pleasant, the highest point on the Island, for spectacular
views over the Grenadines, then walked back down into town. After a leisurely
lunch of chicken roti in the Gingerbread café we took another taxi up to a
small park (i.e. one picnic table and a gazebo) with a view back over the
Bequia channel to St Vincent. It was probably a two mile hike back to Port
Elizabeth and I think we might all have had doubts as to whether it was really
worth it, but we came to a gorgeous bay on the windward side of the island
where three young men were net fishing to get bait. It was a beautiful scene. We spent the evening on board – beers, rum
punch, Thai green curry … and a spectacular sunset. We were all tired and we
didn’t make it much past “boaters midnight”. I wonder if Simon realized just
how low key the nightlife might be on his vacation!
