The problems of being married to a genius

The problems of being married to a genius

Saturday January 9, 2021

We started the day with totally excellent blueberry pancakes prepared by (you guessed it) my genius husband.  Then things took a bit of a turn when we decided that we needed to defrost the fridge and freezer.  I’m not at all sure how it happened but I got “volunteered” to clean out the sump.  This drains both the fridge and the shower and is a fragrant joy! Not that the fridge and freezer was any pleasure either....

Once the wind had settled down a bit in the afternoon, Mike suggested that we take the empty diesel jerry cans in the dinghy and journey across to Miami Beach.  If we ventured up the Collins Canal far enough we would get close to a gas station where we ought to be able to fill the jerry cans.  So far we have found that crossing the lagoon is pretty bumpy.  Added to that, tying up your dinghy in the Collins Canal is forbidden.  Naturally, I was worried. We set off!

The first part of the journey went fairly well as we were protected from the swell by Hibiscus Island.  Then as we got into more open water where there was more boat activity, things got a lot more interesting. Swell seemed to be coming from every direction.  At one point I really started to wonder if the dinghy would tip over.  Finally, we were approaching the entrance to the canal.  Now the water was calm but the bridges were very low and the water was shallow.  Many signs warned that we could not tie up our vessel or it would be subject to towing.  Much of the canal has high sides, most notably on the side near the garage.  I was thinking our outing was doomed but Mike spotted a set of steps descending directly from the gas station.  In fact there was even a cleat and some tire fenders.  A sign told us that customers could “park” for fifteen minutes.  We managed to fill our jerry cans and return the way we came, all within an hour and a half.  Mike is very pleased with his scheme and plans to do the same again tomorrow—after dumping the diesel into the main fuel tank.

  2. Thanks Susan - we hope you and Clark are doing well. Any side effects from the first dose of Covid vaccine? Do you have dose #2 scheduled?
