Stiltsville

Stiltsville

Tuesday 12th January 2021

Today was a very mellow event. We pulled up anchor in Key Biscayne Bight at 7am and motored around to the Key Biscayne channel, the deeper of two channels that link the bay with the ocean. This route took us right past “Stiltsville” where a collection of stilt “houses” have been built on the shallows. Yesterday one of these stilt-houses burned down and we heard some of the communication from the Coast Guard over the VHF radio and also saw a couple of TV reporters doing interviews down at the State Park, which is the closest land to these buildings. Today we heard additional Pan-Pan messages from the Coast Guard warning of debris in the water in the vicinity of the fire … exactly where we were going through the channel. I don’t think Gloria could believe her luck! Anyway, although we saw the remnants of the building we never saw any debris.

Our sail down the coast went fine. I should really say motor because there was next to no wind and glassy seas, albeit a bit rolly. We had our genoa up for a while but when it just started hanging there we furled it up. We travelled about 40 nautical miles and are now anchored just south of Rodriguez Key. It’s pretty open to the ocean but the winds are supposed to strengthen from the north. There are very few decent anchorages between Key Biscayne and Marathon so we make do with what we can get.

four shots of "Stiltsville" as we pass close by in the Biscayne Channel

Stiltsville house - built on sand banks (maybe 1-3 feet deep depending on tide) - totally out in the opwn

Stiltsville house - the Biscayne Light and the State Park are visible in the background

Stiltsville house - Miami in the background

Remnants of the Stiltsville house that burned down yesterday. We saw a photo of the fire on someones phone and it was intense. How did it start ?
