Groggy and Soggy
Tuesday, September 8, 2020
The “groggy” was induced by the anti-seasick meds that we took with our breakfast. The forecast 3-4ft, short period swells sounded fairly ominous to us. We set off from Linekin Bay about 8:30 am, initially in a SSW direction. This was directly into the wind and although we hoisted the mainsail, we continued to motor. After passing a lighthouse on the “Cuckholds” we headed a bit more to the west, aiming to avoid the tip of Cape Small. At Cape Small, we would be able to turn almost due west. Hopefully, we would be able to sail in that new direction. As my advisor was fond of saying: “there’s many a slip between cup and upper lip”.
Just as we were approaching the southern point of Cape Small, the fog descended. There really is nothing good about fog. We had about ten miles further to reach our destination at Jewell Island in Casco Bay. I wish I could say that the fog lifted after a short time—but that was not the case. Using the radar, Mike could see other vessels but they were shrouded until we were uncomfortably close. At one point I could hear another engine but I never saw the boat.
Even when we started to see breaking water around Jewell, the fog was still thick and totally dis-orienting. Once we started to enter the anchorage, there was some clearing. We got the hook down and peeled off our wet gear. We were very grateful to have that journey behind us.
After lunch we sat for a while in the cockpit and watched the fog roll into the anchorage. What will the morning bring?

Foggy evening in the lovely Jewel Island anchorage ... actually the fog started to lift as I was taking these photos. I think the wind died completely.
Hate fog and hope it lifted. I had read that Jewell Island was beautiful so it would be nice to see it.
ReplyDeleteHi Fran, we know from previous trips that Jewel is beautiful ... but no luck this time. Today was a total fog-fest and we fear tomorrow may be no better!
