Salt Pond, Long Island

Salt Pond, Long Island

Wednesday 2nd - Thursday 3rd April, 2025

We have spent the last two days anchored in Thompson Bay, alongside the small community of Salt Pond. We have been re-stocking and cleaning the boat, and generally relaxing. We are anchored about 1/2 mile from shore, because the depths get too shallow further in, and it’s been blowing 20 knots the whole time. Consequently, it’s pretty choppy, and whilst comfortable aboard Cotinga, the dinghy rides have been bumpy and wet affairs. We have made three trips in to fill jerry cans with diesel, water and gasoline, and now we are fully topped up on all of them. We also went in to retrovision at the local store. We had heard it was one of the best shops in the Bahamas and this turned out to be true. There was an excellent selection of food for sale, including frozen meat and fresh produce.

On Wednesday night we also went out to dinner at the highly rated Vantage Pointe restaurant. It’s been a long time since we last ate out and so it seemed particularly special. We arrived at their dock in our dinghy, but the tide was so low we had to get out and pull the dinghy up to the dock! The seating was all outside and we had a wonderful view of the Bay and the sun going down. For starters we shared a lobster dip and then Gloria had pan-fried grouper and I ate ‘fish fingers’, both of us chose fries and a caesar salad. The food was amazing … ‘fish fingers’ doesn’t sound fancy but they were terrific. After dinner we had to drag the dinghy back to deeper water, but the downwind dinghy ride was much easier than the trip in, and we got back just before dark.

Today we are renting a car and are going to explore Long Island by land. We hope to move on to Calabash Bay and Conception Island on Saturday or Sunday and don’t expect to have cell phone coverage, so it may be a few days until we can post again.

Dinner at the Vantage Pointe restaurant ... 5 stars for the ambiance and the food. You can see their dinghy dock in the background, with not much water! (iPhone photo)
