Staying flexible

Staying flexible

Monday May 3, 2021

We had planned to have a lazy start to the morning—waiting until the tide was rising to get going.  When we woke up and saw that thunderstorms were forecast for the early afternoon (in the area where we planned to anchor), we decided to get moving.  By about 7:15am we were on our way.  There certainly were some shallow areas going from Taylor Creek through Gallant Cut and Russell Slough Channel.  Eventually we re-joined the ICW proper and had fewer depth issues.

The morning had an unsettled feeling with squally wind and spits of rain from time to time.  Our sense was that thunderstorms could be a real possibility.  From the Neuse River we turned into South River.  We had anchored in this river with Rod in November. This time we ventured further into the river and anchored near to the south bank to get some protection from the strong southwesterly winds.

The strong southerly winds are forecast to persist for the next two days.  However on Thursday the winds go around to the north for a couple of days.  As fascinating as the Alligator River may be, no one wants to be anchored there for three days! We are working on a plan....

Late this afternoon Gloria called me from the bathroom to say that she needed some help. Yikes I thought – what’ s the problem? It turns out there was a large spider on the floor and Gloria is terrified of spiders. As it turns out the large “spider” was a small crab … we have no idea how it came to be roaming round on our boat. I swiftly captured it with an upturned glass and sheet of paper and following a brief photo session the little critter went back overboard!

p.s. It turned out that the annoying clicking in the boat last night was from outside, today it has disappeared ... maybe it was shrimp munching on the growth on the hull?
