Daufuskie Island, SC

Daufuskie Island, SC

Tuesday 13 April 2021

Today we completed our journey through Georgia and arrived in South Carolina. We were up and ready to depart the Herb River at 8 am but a closer inspection of the route ahead helped us realize that we had only a short distance to go before we encountered a bascule bridge that would open on request … any time after 9am! So we enjoyed an extended breakfast and then got under way. We covered a little less than twenty miles today, working our way up the Wilmington River, through the Elba Island cut, across the Savannah River, through Fields cut, down the Wright river and then up the New River to anchor west of Daufuskie Island. If you look at a regular map of the area you might be hard pressed to see where the route goes, but the nautical charts are pretty clear and it was an uneventful passage. We continue to see lots of dolphins and a variety of birds, including Bald Eagles.

Once we were settled on our anchor and had eaten lunch we took the dinghy ashore to the public landing on Daufuskie Island. It’s really great not be stuck on the boat with nowhere to go to shore! We wandered around for about four hours, enjoying stretching our legs. The island seems to be extensively covered in forests with large pine trees and majestic Live Oaks covered in Spanish moss. There is a network of roads, some paved but mostly sandy dirt roads. It’s possible to hire golf carts and this is mostly what we saw on the roads, but there were a few regular trucks. We made it all the way across the island to a beautiful sandy beach overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The only bad part was when we got back to the dock we were inundated with midges (no-see-ums) whilst we packed up camera gear in a dry bag and prepared for departure. Once clear of the dock we put on the “air conditioning”, craning up the engine and getting the “Dumb Dog” up on a plane, we flashed back to Cotinga in no time at all. Thankfully out on the water the bugs don’t seem too bad and after cold drinks in the cockpit we have now retired below with all our bug-screens in place.
